About the subject

“Art has the role in education of helping children become like themselves, instead of more like everyone else.” – Sydney Gurewitz Clemens.

Before a child talks, they sing. As soon as they stand, they dance. Before they write, they draw. Art is fundamental to human expression.

We believe that through a range of diverse interactions with a huge variety of art and photography, we will open our student’s eyes to the highly visual world we are surrounded by. Reading & interpreting imagery; having personal emotional reactions to art and photography; developing creative problem-solving skills and the pure joy of making using their hands, using a wide range of materials and techniques; are all part of a child’s experience and learning through a visual and tactile means.

Our students experience a highly personalised, modern curriculum, rich in variety of mediums and diversity of artists, craftspeople, architects, and designers, which is underpinned by traditional drawing knowledge and skills.

We believe in the potential of all our students. Through our curriculum we will instil a drive in our students to aspire to achieve excellence and to become the very best they can be.

Our curriculum enables all students to learn practical, theoretical and disciplinary knowledge. The content is carefully selected around our teaching staff expertise, skill set and student choice. Skills are broken down and sequenced into tangible components, to activate prior knowledge, that are re-encountered in different contexts.

Students gain the breadth and fundamental skills needed to produce quality artwork. Our GCSE students should leave Ercall Wood Academy with the skills, confidence and ability to be successful and inspired in whichever creative field they choose to pursue post KS4.

During KS3, students are taught to use a range of techniques to record their observations, as a basis for exploring their ideas. They use a wide range of techniques and media; increase their proficiency in the handling of different materials; and analyse and evaluate their own work, and that of others. They also study the history of art, craft, design and architecture; to exceed the National Curriculum expectations and to build upon KS2 prior learning.

During KS3, students will cover a range of mediums, including:

  • Colour Theory
  • Print making

During lessons, our art teachers model what success looks like so that students know what they are aiming to achieve. This is followed by regular live feedback to develop students’ skills and knowledge in the moment so that they can see improvements immediately.

By the end of KS3, students are equipped with a broad and balanced understanding of the essential knowledge and skills needed to be successful in Art. Whether or not students choose to continue their study of Art at GCSE, students will have developed an appreciation for the visual world around them and be able to utilise this in their own hobbies and wellbeing activities.

Homework is set fortnightly for KS3 students, focussing on developing their understanding of the essential knowledge which underpins their study of art.

At KS3 we offer art clubs for students to attend as well as a range of internal, local and national competitions for students to take part in. These are shared through the department and tutor time.

About the KS4 Curriculum intent, implementation, and impact

The KS4 core focus is on developing students’ exploration of disciplines within the Arts (Fine Art and Photography). The curriculum continues to embed the Formal Elements and is underpinned by mastery. Students build upon their knowledge of historical and contemporary artists, taking instruction and inspiration from a plethora of genres, to develop themselves as both artists and as appreciators of art. Students develop their ability to take risks and they generate a GCSE portfolio of work with greater creative independence. All students, through modelling, are taught to the top with scaffolding, adaptive teaching and stretch and challenge provided when necessary.

Students study Fine Art and Photography in line with the Eduqas WJEC specification at KS4. The course is coherently sequenced to ensure that students build upon skills and knowledge they have established at KS3, using this to become more independent practitioners as they develop their own creative style through their portfolio and summative exam.

Our students achieve highly at GCSE in both Fine Art and Photography, exceeding national expectations. This means that our students have a range of future education pathways open to them within the creative industry.

Homework is set fortnightly for KS4 students, focussing on developing their understanding of the essential knowledge which underpins their study of art.

At KS4, Art and Photography students will have opportunity to visit galleries and are regularly invited to art exhibitions and end of year shows held by further education institutes. There is also opportunities for students to work alongside visiting practitioners and take part in bespoke workshops.
