About the subject

“Some people want it to happen, some wish it would happen, others make it happen” – Michael Jordan

Our Vision

To create an outstanding culture of pride in PE, where students gain procedural and declarative knowledge, receive the opportunity to participate and compete, and have the chance to enrich their cultural capital and experiences.

Achieving our vision allows students to become aspirational young people who can respect and empower themselves and others.

Nature of the Subject

Our ambitious Physical education curriculum inspires and empowers all students to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically demanding activities. It provides opportunities for students to develop their knowledge and become confident in a way which supports their physical, mental and social wellbeing. We provide students with opportunities to compete in sport and other activities which build character and help to embed values such as fairness, respect, integrity and resilience.

About the KS3 Curriculum intent, implementation, and impact

  • To allow students to develop deep, long-lasting knowledge of sport, that will allow them to access academic qualifications so they can thrive in further education and the world of work
  • To allow students to develop their interpersonal skills, leadership and confidence so that they can confidently engage in sport and the world around them
  • To provide students with new experiences and enrich their cultural capital to allow them to make informed choices about their future
  • To develop aspirational young people who have been given the opportunity to develop their integrity and resilience
  • To ensure students develop their motor competence and physical literacy to excel in a broad range of physical activities as well as develop a passion for sport so that they can lead healthy active lives

KS3 students have two, one hour PE lessons each week. Lesson 1 consists of a skill-based lesson where they develop their fundamental skills and motor competence. The second lesson of the week is a game focused lesson where students have the opportunity to apply their knowledge from lesson 1. Students will complete a sport for 6 weeks/half term.

The KS3 PE curriculum is centered around three pillars; motor competence, rules, tactics & strategies, and healthy participation. In addition to developing the procedural and declarative knowledge of the students, we also develop their vocabulary, ensuring that in each lesson there is a centralised ‘Word of the Day’, that will also be included in their assessments. The autumn term focuses on invasion games, the spring term continues with an invasion game focus whilst also introducing net and wall sports, and the summer term focuses on striking and fielding & athletics. There is a rotation during the summer term where KS3 students participate in outdoor and adventurous activities.

Every KS3 student also participates in one dance lesson, every two weeks, with a specialist dance teacher. Students are assessed at the end of each six-week scheme of work. Students are assessed on their knowledge, vocabulary, the three pillars and their attitude to learning, giving them an overall score out of 60 for each sport.

Our KS3 PE curriculum develops aspirational young people who have been given the opportunity to develop their integrity and resilience. Students are given the opportunity to develop their motor competence and physical literacy so they can excel in a broad range of physical activities as well as develop a passion for sport so that they can lead healthy active lives.

Motor Competence

In year 7 students will have built on their prior knowledge from key stage 2, to develop their fundamental movement skills and physical literacy. By the end of Year 9, students will have developed their physical literacy to a point where they can demonstrate the core skills in each sport to an advanced level.

Rules, tactics and strategies

Students will progress through KS3 from understanding basic rules, tactics and strategies in Year 7, to gaining an advanced understanding in Year 9. In addition to this they will also have the necessary knowledge to take on the role of a coach, official, or umpire.

Healthy Participation

At the start of KS3 students will gain a basic understanding of what is meant by healthy participation. For example, at the start of Year 7, students are expected to lead warm ups to their peers. By the end of KS3 students will have developed a passion for sport and have a clear understanding of what is meant by healthy participation. Students will understand the physical, mental and social benefits of leading a healthy active lifestyle.

By the end of the KS3 PE curriculum students will have developed the below skills:

  • Understanding tactics
  • Physical literacy
  • Subject specific vocabulary
  • Teamwork
  • Problem solving
  • Leadership skills
  • Communication skills
  • Analysing situations

These skills will allow students to access the OCR Level 2 Cambridge National in Sport Studies course and therefore pursue further education and careers in sport.
